NWA a Top, Underrated ‘Innovation Hotbed’

A premier business magazine picked Northwest Arkansas as one of the nation’s top 10 innovation hotbeds in its latest issue.

Fast Company selected the Northwest Arkansas metropolitan area among the select group that also includes the metropolitan areas of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Sarasota, Fla.; Buffalo, N.Y.; Rochester, N.Y.; Nashville, Tenn.; Madison, Wisc.; St. Paul, Minn.; Richmond, Va.; and Detroit, Mich.

The magazine recognized the importance of Walmart to the region’s innovation, but it acknowledged that Northwest Arkansas has “a slew of innovative retail companies.”

“Recognitions like this are important because it introduces more and more of Northwest Arkansas to the world,” said Mike Harvey, chief operating officer of the Northwest Arkansas Council, a private nonprofit organization that promotes economic opportunity, infrastructure improvements, educational enhancements and community vitality. “It’s important that people see we certainly are a region with huge companies such as Walmart and Tyson Foods, but there’s so much more here for people to find out about and discover.”
