Walmart is a world leader in sustainability and the company views sustainability as a critical business strategy. The Applied Sustainability Center at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville is working to accelerate learning and expand the commitment to sustainable practices in the public and private sectors through education, outreach and research.
Why Northwest Arkansas
The University of Arkansas, a leading research university, has a variety of assets and resources to support businesses that are developing and using sustainable technologies. The National Center for Reliable Electric Power Transmission (NCREPT) at the university is involved in research related to energy storage devices for applications in the power grid and is also providing much needed human resources for emerging technologies in the power utility, power electronics, and energy storage sectors.
Another important asset is the Arkansas Research and Technology Park in Fayetteville, which supports collaboration between the university and technology-based companies. It includes the Enterprise Center, the Innovation Center, the Genesis Technology Incubator, the High Density Electronics Center, the Engineering Research Center and NCREPT.
Important research also occurs in Northwest Arkansas in solar energy. The Generating Renewable Energy with Efficient Nanoplasmonic Solar Cells Research Center, or “GREEN Center” at the University of Arkansas, studies solar energy and ways to make it more efficient. In addition, the Vertically Integrated Center for Transformative Energy Research, or “VICTER Center” at the university, studies nanotechnology that will be useful in making solar panels more efficient.
